There is reason to believe that Eric and Dylan’s rampage was also fueled by their anger toward the police for arresting them. Some people believe their arrest in January 1998 was what sparked their plan as a way to seek revenge for getting caught stealing equipment from the van.
They obsessed over killing cops and wrote, “our wrath for January’s incident will be Godlike” in a friend’s 1998 yearbooks. They also spent a great deal of time looking out the library windows at the cops, expecting their car bombs to go off and cause more damage.
Dylan told police, “Almost at the same time, we both got the idea of breaking into this white van” while Eric told police, “Dylan suggested we should steal some of the objects in the white van. At first I was very uncomfortable and questioning with the thought.”
